U.S. should reconsider Ecuador/Bolivia trade-industry

It’s fairly clear to everyone by now that American business interests have been working with the Bush administration to undermine the governments of countries in Latin America. However, this move is unusually brazen and open. A powerful coalition of business groups is calling for an end to duty-free trade access for goods from Ecuador and Bolivia to the United States. This is directly related to the “takeover” of businesses by elected governments which, “while U.S. companies and citizens were not involved in all of these cases” they may be in the future. Big oil is trying to put the squeeze on Ecuador for its ‘expropriation’ of Occidental Petroleum’s assets in the country, as well as the ongoing prosecution of Chevron Oil executives for environmental destruction and human rights abuses. The move may also be related to increasing Russian, Chinese and Iranian involvement in the region. (more…)

War: Pakistan

U.S. and Pakistani military forces clashed once again on September 25th, this time engaging in a firefight near the Afghan-Pakistani border.  Two OH-58 Kiowa helicopters received ground fire from Pakistani troops whilst escorting a U.S./Afghan patrol. Troops from both sides engaged each other with small arms fire shortly afterward.  The firefight lasted five minutes with no reported casualties.

Iraqi FM: “Very Clear Timeline” of US Troop Withdrawal Needed

Iraq’s foreign minister, Hoshyar Zebari, said Sunday the United States must provide a “very clear timeline” to withdraw its troops from Iraq as part of an agreement allowing them to stay beyond this year. (more…)

NBC Hires Kissinger Associate

NBC Hires Kissinger Associate as China Analyst for Olympic Games Meanwhile, investigative journalist Ken Silverstein has revealed that NBC News’ China analyst for the Olympic Games is a close business associate to former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. NBC’s analyst Joshua Cooper-Ramos is the managing director and partner at the Beijing office of Kissinger Associates. (more…)

Two Pro-Tibet Protesters Arrested at Olympics

Police in Hong Kong threw two pro-Tibet protesters out of the city’s Olympics equestrian arena early on Saturday. The pair had smuggled a Tibetan flag into the venue but were forcefully dragged away as they tried to reach into their bag for the flag. Interfax: NATO Troops Moving Toward South Ossetia

Russia Today is reporting that Russia’s Interfax news agency claims residents of Georgia have spotted convoys of NATO military vehicles moving toward South Ossetia. A Google News search does not produce any results on this alleged development.

The BBC is distorting the News from the Georgia Region

As usual, the BBC is twisting and distorting the news coming out of the Georgia region. We keep being told that around 1500 have been killed in Georgia, the inference being that this has resulted from Russian bombing. (more…)
